Alfonso Portabalez González is an expert in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. He has 10 years of international experience, both in large-scale projects and start-ups, as well as with NGOs and diverse organizations in the field of development cooperation.

Alfonso started his career in Cusco, Peru, cooperating with ONGAWA (Engineers Without Borders), where his duties included the deployment and management of a WiMax network, software development and writing of technical guidebooks. After that, he worked as a Cybersecurity engineer in a military base with NATO clearance, developing secure networks. He then worked in Thailand for Baan Dek Foundation, creating a secure system for the NGO workers to store sensitive data. This included many trips to the field, and cooperation with the social workers.

After these positions, he worked at the international laboratory CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland, creating an automated system of prediction of failure in Hard Drives and SSDs involving multivariate time series forecasting. This project was presented at at CHEP 2018 (Conference in High Energy and Nuclear Physics) at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria, and it included the publication of a scientific paper.
Alfonso also worked for start-up Draper&Dash in London, UK, doing healthcare data predictions and model customization for NHS data. He then started freelancing, and working for a variety of British companies.

Beyond his working experience, Alfonso also obtained a Master’s Degree on Telecommunications Engineering, with a focus on Biomedical Engineering, at UPM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), in Spain. He researched and developed his Master’s Thesis at Doshisha University, in Kyoto, Japan. Apart from this, he obtained another Master’s Degree on Contemporary History and Politics at Birkbeck, University of London, in the UK.
